Isn’t it just great from time to time, to treat
yourself or your friends with a fantastic cappuccino topped with cinnamon or
cocoa?
But what happens when you have a basic espresso
machine with only one boiler?
Do you cringe when your guests ask you
cappuccinos, because you know it will take you AT LEAST 20 minutes to pull the
shots and froth your milk?
Picture this.
You invite your friends to come over for dinner.
From appetizers to entrées, food is mouth-watering, wine is excellent, your
favorite music plays in background, conversations are fascinating…
Everything in the dining room is
perfect!
Now it’s time for dessert, a rich triple-chocolate
mousse, and you offer your guests an espresso or a cappuccino with that
triple-delight.
Everybody knows you top your gorgeous cappuccinos
with cinnamon, and everybody wants one.
You walk to your kitchen to make four cappuccinos.
Your machine only has a single boiler, so you have to use the same boiler to brew
first, and then froth your milk.
With only one boiler, your espresso
machine CAN’T brew and steam quickly…
You can’t do both at the same time, or even one
right after the other, because brewing temperature is lower than frothing
temperature, and it takes time for water to heat up between the two.
Now, it wouldn’t make any sense to brew one
espresso, heat water further to froth the milk, go back to brewing temperature,
pull the 2nd shot, heat up again and froth milk… 4 times in a row.
Your friends might eat dessert, play a
game and leave before you even come out of your kitchen…
Not to mention, the foam on top of the first
completed cappuccino will begin to disappear like an Arctic iceberg before you even
start the fourth one!
So you decide to start by making the 4 base
espressos before frothing any milk.
Oh no! Having to warm the cups manually
DOUBLES the time it takes to brew!
You’re standing in front of your espresso machine,
waiting for the boiler to be ready, waiting for the light to come on…
Go!
You turn on the pump to run hot water in each of
the cups, one at a time, stopping the pump between cups and letting the water heat
again to make sure all cups are well warmed up.
Now your water tank is half empty and needs to be
filled.
None of the four cups have coffee in it yet, just
hot water for now… You have to move fast and be precise to brew four
espressos.
But here’s the thing:
The first espresso that’s brewed stays on the
counter and has time to cool down while waiting for its milk froth…
10 minutes later, all your espressos are
sitting on the counter top, getting cold while waiting for their
milk.
You switch your machine to steam mode, wait, wait
again for the light and…
Go! You produce just enough foam to top two
espressos.
It takes an extra 10 minutes to froth
enough milk for everyone.
You top the espressos with the froth and a dash of
cinnamon, and all four cappuccinos are now ready.
They look fantastic and you are proud of your
cappuccinos, you’ve done a good job!
And it’s a shame because cappuccino is
best enjoyed hot…
Who’s going to get the lukewarm
cappuccino?
That’s an easy question. If you’re anything like
me, you’ll sacrifice yourself and drink cold….
So you come back from the kitchen 20 minutes after
you left, with four cappuccinos on the tray.
That’s when you realize you have no clue what
they’re talking about, their chocolate mousse is long-gone, and they’re waiting for
the drink you’re finally bringing to the table.
You obviously give your friends the freshest
cappuccinos and keep the older two for you and your partner.
You pick up not quite where you left, but evening
is young, and all in all, you stay up late and have a great time.

time!
